The Roanoke County School Board has selected Catawba District member Don Butzer to serve as the chairman of the board for 2019. This is his first term serving as chairman.
He was appointed to the Roanoke County School Board in July 2016 to serve a portion of the unexpired term for the Catawba District seat and was elected to serve a full term in 2017.
Butzer was employed by Verizon Communications, a Fortune 50 Company, for 39 years, where he was the executive responsible for Verizon’s Building Engineering and Facilities Management for the seven-state Mid-Atlantic Region.
Butzer previously has served on the Roanoke Planning Commission representing the Catawba District, and is a past-president of the Catawba Valley Ruritan Club, past-president of the Parish Council of Holy Trinity Church; and as served as Chief of Elections for the Catawba voting precinct.
In addition, the board named Tim Greenway, representing the Vinton District, to serve as the board Vice-Chairman. Greenway was first elected to the Roanoke County School Board in 2015 and is serving his second term as Vice-Chairman.
