Roanoke College’s John Caldwell has been named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season after leading the Maroons to a win over Hampden-Sydney in Salem Saturday.
Caldwell helped the Maroons to a 78-74 triumph over Hampden-Sydney with a career-high 32 points and 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. He helped the Maroons recover from a 13-point second-half deficit by shooting 9-of-15 from the field including 6-of-8 from three-point range. He was also 8-of-9 from the foul line and blocked two shots. For the season, Caldwell is second in the ODAC in points scored (242) and scoring average (20.2 ppg). He is second in field goals made (82) and three-pointers made (37) while leading the league in minutes played (34.3 mpg).
Roanoke rallied from a double-digit halftime deficit in the game, 44-33. The Tigers came out and extended their lead to 49-36 when a Caldwell three-pointer sparked what would prove to be 22-5 run that C.J. Miles capped with a bucket to give RC a 58-54 lead with eight minutes to play.
After a Malik Crute three-pointer cut the RC lead to 66-63 with under three minutes to play, Eli Sumpter drained a three-pointer on the Maroons ensuing possession to make it 69-63. Roanoke then made 9-of-10 free-throws in the final 1:34 to seal the win.
Caleb Jordan had 15 points and six rebounds, while C.J. Miles chipped in with 12 points. H-SC was led by JaVonte Reddick, who had 12 points.
The Maroons evened their record at 6-6 with the win, they’re first conference victory in four tries. Roanoke played host to Lynchburg College on Wednesday night, and Saturday they’re at Randolph-Macon for a 2 pm game.
