The Salem High boys played three close lacrosse games in the past week, losing by one goal at Franklin County, winning by one at home against Jefferson Forest and tying Albemarle.

Salem lost to Franklin by a 10-9 score last week despite four goals by Evan McMillan and three by Trent Cheyney. Zach Mason had a goal and three assists.

“We started the game slowly and were down 6-1 at the half,” said Salem coach Daniel Dyer. “We were able to get back into the game in the second half, but mistakes at critical times hurt us in the end.”

Salem tied Albemarle, 6-6 in overtime. The power went out early in the first period and the game was moved to Western Albemarle. Halftime was shortened to two minutes but it still got too dark to play after one overtime period and the game was declared a draw. Cheyney led Salem with three goals.

On Saturday the Spartans hosted Jefferson Forest and pulled out an 8-7 win. Cheyney was a standout again, winning 16 of 17 faceoffs for Salem.

“Face-offs were crucial as the game continued and JF went on a run in the fourth quarter,” said Dyer. “I was proud of our effort throughout the game and how we kept battling no matter the score.”

Salem is off the rest of the week.
