Dr. Jon Bruce Hagadorn, 85, of Salem, Virginia, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2025. Born on April 17, 1940, in Bradford, Pennsylvania, Bruce lived a life defined by kindness, generosity and a deep love for family, friends, community and his dogs.
Bruce’s early years took him from Olean, N.Y. to Jamestown, N.Y., where he began 8th grade and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1958. He was elected senior class president and voted “Most Likely to Succeed” – a prediction he fulfilled with grace and humility. He earned his B.A. from Duke University and his M.D. from Albany Medical College of Union University. His medical training included an internship and surgical residency at Rochester General Hospital, followed by an ENT residency at Yale University. He served as a Major in the U.S. Army at DeWitt Army Hospital, Fort Belvoir, Va.
Bruce dedicated over 25 years as an Ear, Nose & Throat physician at Lewis-Gale Medical Center and later added Medical Director of Lewis-Gale Clinic to his duties. A proud resident of Salem, Va. for 52 years, he was a dedicated member of Taylor Masonic Lodge where he was awarded the Virginia Perfect Ashlar Award in 2013 for his exemplary character and service. He was also actively involved at Christ Episcopal Church, the Bradley Free Clinic and the Salem VA Medical Center, where he volunteered in retirement.
Known for his infectious smile and unwavering compassion, Bruce was beloved by his patients and neighbors alike, to whom he often made house calls. He had a special gift for working with children, often wheeling young patients to surgery in a little red wagon, bringing comfort and joy to an otherwise scary experience. He was always ready to lend a hand, whether providing sports physicals or tending to neighborhood injuries or illnesses. He had a remarkable ability to make people feel seen, valued and cared for.
A lifelong sportsman, Bruce played basketball, baseball, golf, enjoyed fishing and was a devoted fan at his son, David’s games. He especially loved golf and was a longtime member of Hidden Valley Country Club, where he played countless rounds with friends and family—and joyfully dressed as the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus during holiday events.
He adored his grandchildren, who lovingly called him “Papa Bruce”, and cherished every moment spent with them. A frequent and enthusiastic babysitter, he loved taking them on fun outings – feeding ducks at the Salem duck pond, playing arcade games at Chuck E. Cheese and Thunder Valley, or enjoying a meal at Long John Silver’s. His playful spirit and gentle heart made him a beloved companion for adventures both big and small.
Bruce is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Judy; son David Hagadorn (Michelle); grandchildren, Brooks Hagadorn, Kaylee Hagadorn and Caleb Hagadorn; sister, Lynn Radack; and a host of relatives and friends who will forever cherish their memories with him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Chester Hagadorn, and brother, Jere Hagadorn.
The family would like to thank Brookdale Roanoke for their compassionate care over the past 20 months.
A funeral service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Roanoke, Va., on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., with a reception and visitation to follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 Michigan Ave., Fl 17, Chicago IL 60601; The Shriner’s Children’s Association, 2900 N Rocky Point Dr., Tampa Fl 33607; or to Christ Episcopal Church Roanoke, 1101 Franklin Rd SW 24016.
