The Glenvar Highlanders sat out a week and moved up in the VHSL rankings. Glenvar moved back into first place in Group 2A, Region C despite having a bye week.

Last week at this time the Highlanders trailed Appomattox, falling to second place in the rankings after suffering their first loss of the season, to Giles. Last week was Glenvar’s bye, but the Highlanders moved back into first despite Appomattox beating Colonial Heights, 56-8.

“All the teams we played won, and we jumped them,” said Glenvar coach Kevin Clifford. “The way I see, if we win this Friday we’ll be the top seed.”

Glenvar will end the regular season at Radford this week. The Bobcats are 2-7 after beating hapless Carroll County for just their second win last Friday, 24-7. However, Clifford is making sure his team takes nothing for granted with home-through-region on the line.

“They’re as athletic as all get out and there’s a lot at stake here,” said Clifford of the Bobcats. “It will be a tough match-up for us. They get kids with the ball in space and we’re going to have to play good defense. “

The bye came at a good time for Glenvar. Everyone’s a little banged up at this time of the year so having a Friday off was welcome.

“We’re a little dinged up,” said Clifford. “But we’re excited about where we stand and we’re enjoying every day, one day at a time.”

Glenvar is 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the Three Rivers District. The Three Rivers has three teams in the top four of the region with Glenvar in first, Giles in third and Floyd County in fourth. Giles(2014), Glenvar(2015) and Appomattox(2016 & ’17) have won the last four state championships in Group 2A.

“I think we have the best region in the st ate,” said Clifford.
