The Sandlot Super Bowl football tournament for youth teams is underway, with championship finals scheduled for November 11 at Salem Stadium in three age groups. Champions will be crowned in the PeeWee, Little and Junior Divisions.
The PeeWee Division is for eight and under players. The 11 team tournament was scheduled to begin Wednesday with all three Salem teams playing at Spartan Field. Winners advance to the quarterfinal round Saturday at Spartan Field at 9 and 10:30 am.
The Glenvar PeeWee team got a first round bye and will play a quarterfinal at Bogle Field behind Cave Spring Middle School on Saturday at 10:30 am. Seeds for the PeeWees are drawn at random, as the PeeWees don’t keep score during the regular season.
Little Division games, for 10 and under, opened last Saturday and two Salem teams were eliminated. The Salem(Stump) team lost to Vinton, 6-0, and the Salem(Clinevell) team forfeited it’s game to Glenvar. This year teams are listed by coaches on the tournament bracket.
The Glenvar team will advance to a quarterfinal game Saturday at Bogle Stadium at 1:30 pm. The Salem(Dawyot) team will play a 4:30 pm game at Bogle. Dawyot is the second seed and Glenvar is the fourth seed among 13 teams.
In the Junior Division, for 12 and under teams, Mike Jones’ Salem team is the top seed among nine. Salem will play at noon on Saturday at Spartan Field, possibly against Glenvar. The eighth seeded Glenvar team was scheduled to play ninth seeded Hidden Valley on Wednesday for the right to play top-seeded Salem on Saturday.
All semifinals are November 4 at Bogle and the Sandlot Super Bowl championship games are at Salem Stadium a week later.
