Lauren Heffron recorded a hat trick as the Roanoke College field hockey team shut out Randolph-Macon, 7-0, in the ODAC Quarterfinal match Tuesday evening in Salem. This was the Maroons’ first field hockey tournament win since 2004.
With the win the Maroons improve to 14-4 on the season and advance to Friday’s semifinal round at Washington & Lee University in Lexington. Roanoke will play Lynchburg College at 7 pm, and the championship game will be at W&L Saturday.
Emilee Wooten broke open the scoring with a goal from a reverse slide pass from Leonore Keunen 13 minutes into the contest. Heffron found the back of the cage ten minutes later to make it a 2-0 game and Wooten tacked on the final goal of the half send RC into the intermission with a 3-0 lead.
Five minutes into the second half, Heffron scored off a penalty stroke with a shot to the top left side of the cage. Megan Diehl extended the gap with a high, one-time shot, off a pass from Fiona Dougan, with 24 minutes left on the clock. Heffron earned the evening’s hat trick with a goal, assisted from Keunen, to make it 6-0 and Keunen then followed suit with a goal of her own off a breakaway to close out the scoring.
