It was St. Patrick’s Day to open the softball season Monday and team in green had their Irish up at the Glenvar field. The Highlanders opened the season with a 20-1 win over visiting Craig County.
Glenvar put it away early with three runs in the first inning and 11 in the second on their way to a slaughter-rule five inning win. Abby Teubert went the distance on the mound, striking out 12 while only allowing two hits.
Glenvar had 16 hits and 10 different players had at least one hit each. Teubert and Hannah Street led the offense with three hits and four RBIs each while Zella Hayes had two hits and two RBIs and Cora Meade added two hits.
On Tuesday the Highlanders hosted Hidden Valley and made it 2-0 with a 6-5 win over the Titans on a walk-off hit by Zella Hayes. Glenvar will host Northside on Friday, then take off next week for spring break.
“We hope to improve off last year’s record of 12-9,” said coach Lonnie Raines. “We return the senior pitching duo of Abby Teubert (Milligan University commit) and Hannah Street (Roanoke College commit) and this year’s senior class also has Amelia Gierke (Emory & Henry University commit). We return all our starters, except one and look to see an immediate impact from freshman Zella Hayes, who will play shortstop and third base.”
