The Glenvar volleyball team saw their season come to an end with a loss to Giles in the quarterfinal round of the Group 3A, Region C tournament Tuesday. The Spartans took a four-set win in Pearisburg.
The Region C tournament included 13 teams, and the sixth seeded Highlanders got off to a good start with a sweep of Buckingham County Monday night. Glenvar opened at home and won 25-6, 25-10 and 25-7.
“They weren’t as strong as I expected, and that two and half hour bus ride probably didn’t help,” said Glenvar coach Basil Conner.
Taylor Dishon served up four aces for the Highlanders and Kiera Omberg and Hannah Green had six kills each. Sydney McMahon, McKenna Jarvis and Abby Cairns had four kills each for Glenvar.
That matched the Highlanders up with third seeded Giles on Tuesday. The Spartans won the first two sets, 25-15 and 25-11, but Glenvar bounced back to win the third, 25-23. Giles took an early lead in the fourth set and held off a Glenvar rally to win 25-19 and take the match.
“We got off to a slow start, and Giles is a good team,” said Conner. “They’ll have to play James River in the semifinals, and those two teams probably should be playing in the championship game. To me, they’re the best two teams in the tournament.”
The regional semis are tonight at the higher seeds and the championship is Saturday. The top two teams advance to the state tournament, which begins on November 11.
Glenvar’s season is over at 11-12. Conner expected a little better back in August.
“We really didn’t have a leader on the team this year,” he said. “No one wanted to step up. Next year we have some girls on the jayvee team who will be coming up, and they have a little fire in them.”
