The Glenvar girls made a run at ending their four-season losing streak Monday but let it slip away down the stretch. The Highlanders lost to Giles at home Monday, 49-33, then fell to Floyd Tuesday, 49-35, to see their losing streak reach 62 games. Audrey Moles had 23 points against Floyd.
Monday’s game was close for three quarters. Giles had only won two games this season and Glenvar had an 18-14 lead at the half. The Spartans scored the first eight points of the second half to take the lead but the Highlanders scrapped back to tie the game at 28-28 after three quarters.
Unfortunately, the fourth quarter was a disaster for the Glenvar girls as they saw their opportunity to end the streak slip away. Giles had just a 30-29 lead with five and a half minutes to go but finished on a 19-4 run.
“We definitely had a shot,” said Glenvar coach Cheryl Hayes, who is still looking for her first GHS coaching win in her second season at the helm. “Giles played a great second half and we weren’t able to convert on their turnovers when it mattered.”
Moles led Glenvar with 11 points and Grace Fiedler had eight, including a couple threes.
On Tuesday the girls played their final home game against Floyd and lost to the traditionally strong Buffalo gals. The Highlanders had one more chance to end the streak on Wednesday with their last regular season game against Carroll County but results were too late for publication. The Cavaliers have just three wins and Glenvar only lost by five when the two met in Roanoke County. A win would be a great way to end what has been another frustrating season for the Glenvar girls.
