The Glenvar softball team will play James River for the third time in 11 days to open the Region 2C tournament. The Highlanders will host River today, Thursday, at 5 pm.
Last week the Knights hosted the Highlanders on Monday, May 19, and Glenvar took a 3-1 win in Springwood. Two days later at Glenvar, both teams hit the ball much better as Glenvar took a 12-5 win.
Glenvar trailed in this one, 4-3 into the home fifth. Then, with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Glenvar’s Audrey Moles hit a hard infield single to shortstop. A single by Abby Teubert and an intentional walk to Hannah Street preceded a huge base hit to right field by Haley Leginus. The hit, compounded by a Knight error, led to all three base runners and Leginus scoring on the play. Amelia Gierke then singled and scored on a single by Carsyn Mabes, putting Glenvar ahead 8-4 and that was pretty much the ballgame.
Glenvar had 14 hits in the game, including three each by Teubert and Gierke. Street had two hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs. Teubert and Street split time on the mound, striking out five and allowing seven hits.
On Friday the Highlanders traveled to Floyd for the final game of the regular season and came up a run short, 5-4. Glenvar had several chances to tie the score but wasn’t successful in getting the runner across the plate. The Highlanders had 10 hits with Zella Hayes, Madison Duncan, Hayden Hartz and Street all having two each. Teubert went all seven innings on the mound.
With the loss the Highlanders finished 14-7 in the regular season, earning the fourth seed in the region. Tonight’s winner will advance to the semifinals, and the semis and finals will both be played at the Botetourt Sports Complex next week.
