There’s a lot of tradition involved with the Glenvar baseball team, and first year head coach Ben Amos is now the one in charge. One of the traditions has been that the Highlanders play their best at the end of the season, and so far, so good.

The Highlanders won their sixth straight game on Tuesday with the Conference 38 tournament just around the corner. After starting the season 5-5 Glenvar is now 11-6 and has clinched the top seed in the conference. The Highlanders are 9-0 against conference teams with one regular season conference game to go, today at home against Floyd.

Glenvar hosted Giles on Tuesday and shut out the Spartans, 8-0.  Hunter Phlegar and Cody Alexander pitched three innings each and Logan Lucas completed the shutout with a scoreless seventh inning. The three combined for nine strikeouts.

R.J. Rorrer had a single, a double, an RBI and two runs scored to lead the offense. Austin Meadows had an RBI double and Glenvar benefited from a plethora walks by Giles pitching.

On Monday Meadows hurled a gem as the Highlanders won at Floyd County, 5-1. Austin allowed just three hits and walked none in a complete game win, fanning 25. He faced just 25 batters, four over the minimum, and finished the game on 104 pitches.

Glenvar got two hits each from Matthew Pulliam and Jacob Mullins in the win. Rorrer had a squeeze bunt to score a run.

After today’s home game with Floyd the Highlanders will play a non-conference game at Covington Friday to wind up the regular season. The conference tournament is at Salem’s Kiwanis Field next week and Glenvar has yet to lose a game in the month of May. Amos is hoping to finish out the month unscathed.

“What I’d really like to see is to be undefeated in June,” he quipped.
