The Glenvar High boys will open the Region 2C basketball tournament on the road this Friday against an opponent that was yet to be determined at press time. Martinsville, Floyd County and Liberty are possible first round opponents but that won’t be decided until all regular season games conclude this week.

The Highlanders had two games this week to end the regular season. On Tuesday they beat Floyd County on the road, 63-58, to even their record at 11-11 overall and 7-4 in the tough Three Rivers District. They had a game at home against Carroll County on Wednesday but results were too late for publication.

“Great team win on the road,” said Glenvar coach Hank Luton of the Floyd game. “We battled on the backboard and that was the difference. Credit Gray Hutchison and Evan Harris for guarding their bigs and rebounding defensively all night.”

Jax Bolling led Glenvar with 23 points and Parker Doolan had 20.

“I’ll take our two lead guards, Jax and Parker, over anyone in our area,” said Luton. “They made plays tonight when we needed it.”

The Highlanders were at Martinsville last Thursday where they dropped a 76-50 decision to the Bulldogs. Martinsville came into this week at 18-3 and the ‘dogs finished their Three Rivers schedule with a perfect 12-0 record.

Glenvar didn’t go down easy. The Highlanders trailed by just two points late in the first half before Martinsville finished the half on a run.

“We turned it over a few times and gave up a few offensive rebounds and it’s a 13 point deficit at half,” said Luton. “We couldn’t keep pace in the second half. Credit to Martinsville, they are very athletic and well coached. They should be the favorite in Class 2.”

Bolling led Glenvar with 17 points. Doolan and Ryder Francisco had 11 each as the Highlanders scrapped to the final horn.

“I loved the way our kids competed and battled throughout in a great environment,” said Luton. “We are hoping to get another crack at them in the postseason.”
