It was “Lauren Witmer Night” at Glenvar Friday as the Highlanders played host to Giles in softball. Glenvar made it a memorable night with an 11-3 win.
It was actually “Senior Night,” but Witmer is the only senior on Glenvar’s team. However, it was also a night to remember Bill Hollowell, a Glenvar softball fan who passed away earlier in the day. The team held a moment of silence and released green and gold balloons in his memory,”
“Bill was an avid Glenvar fan and had become a huge supporter of Glenvar High School softball,” said GHS coach Lonnie Raines. “With heavy hearts, the girls played this game in memory of Bill.”
They did him justice. Glenvar had 15 hits, including three hits and a run batted in by Olivia Adams. McKenzie Pulliam also had three hits, McKenna Shearer had two hits and four runs batted in and McKenna Jarvis and Lydia Taylor had two hits each.
Shearer pitched all seven innings on the mound. She struck out 12 and allowed just three hits, all in the third inning. Shearer will be counted on heavily from here on in as Courtney Raines is out for the season with a knee injury. Courtney was Glenvar’s horse at the beginning of the season while Shearer was injured.
The Highlanders are now 11-8 on the season and they’ll have their final regular season game tonight at Radford.
