The Glenvar girls cross country team qualified for the state meet with a third place finish in the Class 2, Region C meet at Green Hill Park last week. The boys finished fifth and Dustin Wade advanced to the state meet as an individual.
In the girls race the Three Rivers District dominated, taking the first three spots to send all three to the state meet. Floyd County was first with 34 points, Radford was second with 41 and the Highlanders took third with 81, well ahead of fourth place Nelson County with 102.
Glenvar’s top finisher was Becky Linkous, who came in fifth overall with a time of 20:43.80. Rachel Millirons of Glenvar ran side-by-side with Linkous and also came in at 20:43.80 and was awarded sixth place. Chloe Phillips of Floyd won the race in 19:31.
Also scoring for the Highlanders were Kailee Sesler in 14th, Isabelle Pope in 28th and Madison Osburn in 29th place. There were 67 girls in the race, as Glenvar qualified for the state for the second year in a row.
Three Rivers schools came in first and second in the boys’ race as James River was the region champion and Radford took second. Gretna was the third team advancing to the state, followed by Three Rivers schools Floyd, Glenvar and Giles in the next three spots.
Will Miller of James River won the race by over a minute with a time of 15:34. Dustin Wade was Glenvar’s top runner, finishing 13th in 17:32. That was good enough to qualify for the state meet this weekend.
Also scoring for the Highlanders were Bryant Loftis in 28th place, Adren Jacobs in 30th, Brendan Killeen in 33rd and Peyton Fletcher in 40th place. There were 81 runners in the boys’ race.
“Though our boys’ team came up short they have progressed tremendously since last season,” said coach Amanda Wade. “ With their continuing efforts, I believe that next season we will be even more competitive.”
This weekend the Highlanders will run on Saturday, as the Class 2A races go first. The girls will take the gun at 10:30 am and the boys will go at 11:15 am at the Great Meadows Horse Farm in The Plains, VA, near Warrenton.
