The Glenvar girls basketball team has been besieged by injuries at the worst possible time. Glenvar had six girls out with injuries this week as they played a tough stretch of the season with the post-season approaching.
“I’ve never seen anything like this,” said coach Teddy Moberg. “On Tuesday we had six girls out with injuries. I had seven in uniform, and I had to call up two from the jayvee team.”
The rash of bad luck started last Wednesday when the Highlanders lost a very physical game with Floyd County, 72-22. Two girls suffered concussions in that game and another was lost with an ankle injury.
On Friday at home the girls had just eight healthy bodies against another tough Three Rivers District team, Radford. They lost that one 54-42 as Taylor Dishon, who would go out with an ankle injury three days later, led the team with a dozen points.
On Monday the Highlanders played host to Parry McCluer, who is 15-1 and leading the Pioneer District. The depleted Glenvar girls fell again, 62-28, to fall under .500 for the season at 8-9.
On Tuesday the Highlanders got back to .500 with a 40-35 win over James River. The Knights proved to be just what the doctor ordered, as River is winless for the season. Certainly the doctor has been around to do some ordering, as Glenvar played without two girls who were out with concussions, three who had ankle or foot injuries and another with a wrist injury. Three are starters and three are valuable subs, and starters Dishon and Brooke Rakes could both be out for the season with leg injuries.
The good thing is, the girls who are healthy played hard and all seven in uniform scored. M.K. Holliday led the team with 10 points, Kyleigh Drew had nine, Kiera Omberg had seven and Brooklyn Moorman and Kara Wright had five each.
“I was pleased with the effort,” said Moberg. “Trying to look on the bright side, some of these girls are getting time, or more time than expected, and that might help us down the road. Some girls have had to step up and take the minutes that the others are missing.”
Moberg hopes to have two or three girls back when the Highlanders play at Auburn tonight. Next Tuesday the Highlanders host Giles and a week from today, on February 2nd, Floyd County comes here. That’s Ground Hog’s Day, and Moberg hopes it isn’t a repeat of the game at Floyd.
