The Glenvar softball team went almost two weeks before the girls could get a game in, but once they hit the field they showed they’re going to be a team to be reckoned with. Glenvar opened with wins over two traditionally strong Class 3 teams, Hidden Valley and Northside.
Last Friday at Hidden Valley the Highlanders took a 10-5 win over the host Titans. Freshman Lydia Taylor had an awesome varsity debut, going three-for-three with a solo home run. The Highlanders had seven hits as a team.
Another freshman, Courtney Raines, pitched a complete game for the Highlanders, allowing five hits and striking out seven. She struggled in the bottom of the seventh, walking five batters and allowing four runs, but finished strong, striking out the last two batters to end the game.
On Monday the Highlanders had their home opener under new coach Lonnie Raines. Glenvar fell behind early against Northside but stormed back for a 13-7 win, lighting up the scoreboard for seven runs in the fifth inning. Courtney Raines pitched six innings to pick up her second win and she was also three-for-three at the plate. McKenna Jarvis pitched the seventh.
“We’re a little short on pitching right now due to some injuries,” said coach Raines.
Taylor was three-for-four against Northside, giving her six hits in her first two varsity games. Maddie Martinez was two-for-four and made a couple nice catches in center and Olivia Adams blasted a home run in the sixth inning.
The Highlanders were 2-0 with a home game against Covington scheduled for Wednesday. Today, Thursday, they’re scheduled to host Staunton River in a makeup game.
