Virginia High School League winter sports officially open this week. Salem and Glenvar teams will hit the court, mats and pool for the first week of competition.
Things didn’t get off to a great start, as Glenvar’s girls’ basketball game with Craig County was postponed on Monday due a threat of freezing rain. The Salem boys’ basketball team got their game in and took a 62-50 win over William Byrd in Vinton. See the story and photos in this week’s sports section.
Likewise, the Salem girls’ basketball team opened with a win on Tuesday, at home against Byrd. The Spartans swim team was also scheduled to open Tuesday but results were too late for publication.
On Wednesday, December 3, the Glenvar wrestling team was scheduled to open with a match in Martinsville. The Highlanders will begin their second year under coach Tim Miles.
Tonight, Thursday December 4, both Salem basketball teams play with the girls at Northside at 6 pm and the boys at home against the Vikings. Glenvar’s boys will make their season debut at home against Blacksburg.
Salem and Glenvar wrestlers will take the mat on Friday, December 5, for the two-day Titan Toughman Tournament at Hidden Valley, and Glenvar will also send some wrestlers to a tournament in Greenville, NC. The Glenvar girls’ basketball team is at Eastern Montgomery Friday.
This Saturday the Salem boys’ basketball team will host Mecklenburg County in a Saturday afternoon game with the jayvees at 2 pm and the varsity at 3:30 pm. Also on that day both the Salem and Glenvar indoor track teams will debut at Liberty University.
