The Glenvar volleyball team dropped back-to-back games this week, one to a non-district foe and another to a Three Rivers District opponent. The Highlanders lost to Blacksburg Monday and Giles Tuesday, both in four sets and both at home.
On Monday the girls played a solid match against Blacksburg, a Group 4A state contender. Glenvar lost a close first set, 25-22, then lost the second 25-12. They won the third set, 25-19, but the Bruins had too much firepower and took the fourth, 25-12, to win the match.
“They had too many athletes and too much height,” said Glenvar coach Basil Conner. “We won a game off them and not many have, and we should have also won that first set. I was very proud of our girls.”
Kiera Omberg led Glenvar with 13 kills. Sydney McMahon had eight and Hannah Green had seven kills. Allison Clark contributed 30 assists.
A night later Glenvar didn’t have much gas left in the tank with Giles coming to town. The Highlanders won the first set, 25-22, but things went downhill from there. Giles took the next three, 25-22, 25-15 and 25-12.
“We didn’t have much energy after Monday’s mach,” said Conner. “I changed some people around to try and get a spark but that didn’t work at all.”
Clark had 27 assists against Giles while Omberg had 11 kills and Green had six.
The loss dropped Glenvar to 7-6 on the season. The Highlanders beat Floyd in a marathon match at home last Thursday, 25-12, 20-25, 22-25, 25-11 and 15-11. Omberg had 18 kills, Clark had 40 assists and Abby Cairns had six kills and five blocks.
The Highlanders have a welcome night off tonight before two road games next week, at Radford Tuesday and at Carroll County a week from tonight.
