The Glenvar football team is in line for three more home games if the Highlanders can keep winning. Glenvar is the number one seed in the Region C tournament as Virginia High School League post-season play opens Friday night.
The Highlanders drew eighth seeded Dan River for this Friday’s game at Highlander Stadium, scheduled for 7 pm. The Wildcats lost their regular season finale to Gretna, the tournament’s fifth seed, 22-14 at Gretna High last Friday.
“They’re very athletic and they’re good in space,” said Glenvar coach Kevin Clifford of Dan River. “They’ve had a tough row to how. They play William Campbell, Appomattox, Martinsville, Gretna. . .they’ve played a really tough schedule.”
Glenvar comes in at 9-1 after winning at Radford in their regular season finale last Friday, 28-0. It was the second shutout in the last four games for the Highlanders.
“We really needed that win, there was a lot at stake,” said Clifford. “We needed to win to get the number one seed, and that’s important. I’m proud of their effort.”
Glenvar scored one touchdown in each quarter, all by Jack Leonard. He had runs of two, 11, 71 and one yard as he broke the school scoring record held by Brandon Semones for 25 years. Semones had 30 touchdowns in 12 games in 1992 and Leonard now has 34 in 10 games.
Jack rushed 36 times for 223 yards on Friday and he now has 2,105 stripes for the season. Semones still holds the Glenvar rushing record with 2,242 his senior year but Jack is just 137 yards away with at least one game to go, and possibly as many as five if Glenvar can reach the state championship game.
Landry Gerbers had a slow day at the office, passing just seven times and completing three. Josh Clifford, Colby Street and Logan Williams had one catch each for a total of 38 yards.
Defensively, Street led the Highlanders with 14 tackles. Dakota Francisco had 13 tackles, Maxx Philpott had 10 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery and Williams had nine tackles. Hunter Stanley had eight tackles, including four for losses, and Hunter Phlegar also had eight tackles. Josh Clifford had his school record 10th interception in just 10 games.
Other Region C games this weekend include seventh seeded Martinsville at second seeded Appomattox, sixth seeded Fort Chiswell at number three seed Giles and fifth seeded Gretna at Floyd. If the Highlanders win this week they would play the Gretna-Floyd winner on November 17.
