Austin Meadows picked up the win and Cody Alexander got a save as Glenvar beat Auburn in baseball Tuesday. The Highlanders took a 3-2 win at GHS.
Meadows went four and a third innings, fanning six and allowing just three hits. He left with one out in the fifth as Logan Lucas relieved. However, Lucas struggled with his control, walking six in an inning and two-thirds, and coach Ben Amos called on Alexander to pitch the seventh. Cody retired the Eagles with two strikeouts to pick up the save.
Offensively, Matthew Pulliam was two-for-three to lead the Highlanders. Brayden Smith and RJ Rorrer had one hit each for Glenvar.
The win lifted the Highlanders to 4-3 overall. Last Thursday at Pulaski Glenvar lost a wild one to the host Cougars, 8-7.
Glenvar led early in this one, 5-1, but Andrew Lowe hit a grand slam home run to tie the game. Then, in the bottom of the seventh, Jordan Lytton hit a walk-off RBI single to win the game.
“Boy, that was a wild one,” said Amos.
Alec Thompson led the Highlanders with three hits, including a double, and scored three runs. Smith and Phlegar had two hits each, with Phlegar ripping a double and driving in two. Phlegar took the loss in relief of Meadows.
The Highlanders are back in action Friday with a game at James River. The Knights are a traditional rival and a Conference 38 opponent.
Next week Glenvar will host Radford on Tuesday before taking off for spring break.
