The Glenvar boys knocked off a solid Floyd County team last Friday at GHS for a signature win. The Buffaloes were 11-2 before losing to Glenvar, 69-66.

“Great defensive performance by our guys,” said Glenvar coach Hank Luton. “We were in control throughout.”

Floyd turned a double digit game into a one possession game late but the Highlanders were able to hang on. Ryder Francisco led Glenvar with 23 points followed by 21 for Parker Doolan and 17 for Jax Bolling.

“Really proud of the collective leadership of our group against one of top teams in AA,” said Luton. “Floyd is so well coached, we are fortunate to get a W.”

It was the second close game of the week for Glenvar. Last Wednesday in Vinton the Highlanders battled Class 3 Roanoke County rival William Byrd into overtime before falling 78-71. Glenvar was up by three points with five seconds to go but Byrd hit a three to send the game into overtime and then won the game.

“Dropped another close one on the road where we were in control down the stretch,” said Luton. “We needed to foul before they got shot off, so that’s on me to make sure we are all on same page.”

Bolling had 26 in this one, Doolan had 16 and Evan Harris had 14 ponts.

“Guys showed toughness to keep competing but at end of day we have to make a few more plays and coach better,” said Luton.

Glenvar is now 7-9 overall and 3-3 in a very strong Three Rivers District. The Highlanders were weathered out of a game at Martinsville on Tuesday and are scheduled to host Carroll County tonight, Thursday, in another big 3RD game.

“We’re a handful of plays away from being on the other side of the win/loss column, but that’s athletics,” said Luton. “We’re excited about finishing strong.”
