The Glenvar football team is coming off their bye this week to wrap up the regular season with a game at Floyd County. The Highlanders are 9-0 and looking to have just the third undefeated football regular season in the history of the school.
Glenvar’s last undefeated regular season was 2015, when they finished 12-1 and lost to Union High in the playoffs, 28-27. That was one year after they won the state championship with a 14-1 record, losing to Giles in the last game of the regular season. Giles, who used to be a regular week 10 rival, denied Glenvar a 10-0 record in 2005, 2006 and 2014. Each time Glenvar was 9-0 when they lost to the Spartans, but that rivalry ceased to exist after the 2022 season.
The Highlanders are hoping to finish the regular season with a clean slate at Floyd, who is 7-2. The Buffaloes won their first six games and a battle of unbeatens was anticipated for the Glenvar game. However, Floyd has lost two of the last three, falling 52-49 to Carroll County in a shootout on October 17 and 44-21 to Radford last week. Both games were in Floyd.
“I wasn’t shocked,” said Glenvar coach Kevin Clifford about last week’s Radford win. “Floyd didn’t play their best and Radford does some things that are hard to defend.”
With that said, Clifford isn’t looking for an easy time Friday.
“It’s going to be a dog fight and it’s a game we have to win,” he said.
Glenvar currently leads the Region 2C rankings with a 26.00 power points rating. Gretna is second at 8-1 with a 24.89 rating and the Hawks finish up with Altavista at home this Friday. Altavista is a Class 1 school with a 6-3 record and if Glenvar would lose and Gretna wins it could get close. The top seeded team gets home field throughout the region tournament as long as they win.
