Congratulations to Buzz Williams, and the Hokies, to getting to the NCAA tournament for a second consecutive year. Some are upset, as they lost in the first round. Well, so did UVA, “the best basketball team in the country.” Obviously, they weren’t. But it was still just a basketball game. We have made this country become something important about sports and entertainment. It’s not, compared to the real challenges we have in this country.
Hokie players, you gentlemen, are winners. You have had the privilege to work with the finest coach of any sport. Not to learn skills to play a game. That he did very well and got the most out of you. But that, a lot of coaches can do. More importantly, Buzz Williams taught you respect, discipline, appreciate authority, teamwork, and best, patriotism and what this country is about. You seldom learn that in the classroom, anymore.
Those who don’t know what I am talking about, go look at YouTube and find “Buzz Williams – National Anthem.” If the Hokies don’t win a single game, Buzz Williams should be Coach of the Year, every year. He brought the best out of you, and on a good day, you can beat any team. But the game is still just a game. What he really coached you, will stay with you forever.
