Mason Creek Greenway – Phase 3 (419 Multimodal Improvements)
The City of Salem is proposing to construct a new sidewalk system around Lakeside Plaza. The proposed sidewalk would begin at the trailhead of the Hanging Rock Battlefield Trail, located at 1386 East Main Street. The sidewalk would parallel East Main Street and continue to Electric Road. The sidewalk would continue on the western side of Electric Road (Lakeside Plaza side) to Springfield Avenue. A new pedestrian crossing with ADA accessibility and pedestrian crossing signal will be installed at this intersection. The sidewalk will continue south on Electric Road with sidewalk being installed on both east and west sides of Electric Road. The eastern portion of sidewalk will terminate at McCauley Avenue, while the western portion will terminate at Northern Drive. The City will also install two new Valley Metro Bus Shelters on East Main Street; one on the north side in front of Goodwill and the other on the southern side near the Kroger Fuel Center. This is part of the larger regional Roanoke River and Mason Creek Greenway Trail system. This project is funded through the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) SmartScale Program and being developed through the Locally Administered Projects (LAP) Program.
