Dear Editor,
I voted today. I voted for health care that won’t raise the cost or reduce the benefits for my loved ones who have pre-existing conditions. The ACA has been an amazing help for my own access to health care. I voted for preserving and protecting our area from illegal use of eminent domain. The effects of the MVP in our area are clearly evident. I voted for taking immediate steps to reduce climate change. Our country lags in the global plan to protect future generations.
I voted for addressing the problem of gun violence and the senseless killing of innocents. Sensible gun law enforcement while preserving the rights of sportsmen is only one part of the problem that must be addressed. I voted for mental health coverage by insurance and help for those affected by the opioid epidemic. Pharmaceutical giants are preying on those who need help the most. I voted for humane treatment of immigrants, the poor and diverse populations. Civil rights have been a moral foundation for our country. I voted for separation of church and state. Religious extremists, regardless of their origin, should not create nor enforce our laws.
I voted for the young women of tomorrow to get equal access to health care, to have equal pay for equal work. I encourage women to stand up for themselves, their daughters and their loved ones by voting. I voted to strengthen public schools for the future of this country. Education in a safe environment is crucial to the development of tomorrow’s leaders.
I voted in line with the moral values I was raised with. The values our country has stood for are being replaced by actions that I find offensive and shameful. I have grave concerns about the direction our country is taking, and the only way to change that is to get out and vote. Please exercise your right to vote on Tuesday. No excuses. You can vote early any time between now and Nov. 6 at your Registrar’s Office.
