The Andrew Lewis Middle School basketball teams will be back in action today as the girls play host to Northside at 5 pm and the boys play at Northside.

The girls will be putting their undefeated record on the line, as they’ve been virtually untested after three wins. On Monday they played at Cave Spring and had their closest game to date, a 53-34 win over the host Squires.

“Cave Spring is a good team that really challenged us from the beginning,” said Lewis coach Nat Franklin. “We had some defensive lapses, but I’m proud of the team’s collective effort throughout the game and Kennedy’s (Scales) leadership.”

Scales led Lewis with 20 points. Abbie Baker had 10, Summer Bayne had seven and Rachel Lafrancois had six points. Baker also had eight rebounds and four blocks while Scales had five steals.

The boys improved to 2-1 with their second win in a row, a 45-33 victory over Cave Spring Owyn Dawyot and Tanner Dallas led the Wolverines in scoring while Hunter Bayne led the rebounders and Michael Hannah and Nick Owen gave Lewis a lift off the bench.

“I was very impressed with our defensive efforts, our shot selection, and we did a great job taking care of the basketball,” said coach Brandon Keith. “Our guys are starting to get a strong feel for the system, and the hard work is paying off in many different ways.”

The Lewis wrestling team was scheduled to open Wednesday at Central Academy with a tri match againt Maury River and the host team. Next Tuesday Lewis is at Read Mountain, and the first home match is Wednesday, November 29, against Hidden Valley, Christiansburg and North Cross.
