Steven Lawrence Marshall, 67, of Salem, Va., passed away on Monday, November 10, 2025.

He was born on January 6, 1958, in Roanoke, Va., to the late Betty Lakes Marshall and L. Julian Marshall.

Steve is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Darlene; daughter, Jayne Marshall Richlak (Michael); and son, Owen Lawrence Marshall.  Surviving also are his sweet granddaughters, Maeve and Isla.

Steve was senior class president of William Byrd High School (76), and Carson-Newman College (80).  He ran track at both schools, and that love for the sport led him to become a USATF official.  He was known around the valley for setting up cross country courses, officiating high school and college meets, and volunteered his services for 35 years at the annual Cosmo Track Meets.

Steve was a member of Salem Baptist Church.  He was also a member of a recovery group in Roanoke.  People there recognized his servant’s heart, as well as his neighbors in Salem.  Steve loved bird watching, hiking, and coin and stamp collecting.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 16, 2025, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Salem Baptist Church located at 103 N. Broad Street in Salem, Va. 24153.  A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 17, 2025, at 11 a.m., also at Salem Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children’s Ministry at Salem Baptist Church or any charity of your choice.  Online condolences may be expressed at www.johnmoakey.com.
