I got a good feeling about last week’s football contest. Life isn’t always fair, but sometimes it works out.
Last week I wrote about the contest in the October 23rd issue. Bob Kiker, who enters every week but rarely wins, was our winner. He missed two and hit the high point total, 56 by Glenvar, right on the nose. Gary Sovine, who also rarely wins because he always picks the Browns, had two wrong and 55 as his high point total. So, if Glenvar had missed one extra point Gary would have been the winner.
This week, Gary is the winner. He missed four, as did several others, and once again he picked 55 as his high point total. This week, however, that was closest to the 59 Liberty rung up against Delaware. And, ironically enough, the Browns recently traded Delaware alum Joe Flacco. Go Browns, go Blue Hens, go figure.
So, Gary is our weekly winner and he gets the $50 gift certificate from Mac & Bob’s. Good thing I didn’t put the Browns on the contest last week.
For our 19th hole winner I asked you to suggest a name for our Carolina League baseball team. The new name will be announced Saturday and I wrote a column about the event in this week’s paper. It starts on page 12 and is continued on this page.
For our winner I’m picking Darin Creger, who suggested Blue Ridge Bombers. I don’t know if that name is better than some of the others but it was tough to pick one and I know Darin’s son Will is on the Salem High golf team so he’s more likely to use a free day of golf at the Salem course.
For this week’s 19th hole give me your prediction on the big game between the Browns and Jets this Sunday. The Jets have traded away most of their good players and Flacco, after leaving the Browns, passed for for over 400 yards and four scores for the Bengals last week. Put your answer in the space provided and the closest to the actual score of 0-0 will get a free round of golf, and hopefully it will be someone who plays golf.
