Honors for Class 2, Region 3 football were announced this week and Glenvar was well-represented, as you might expect after another highly successful season by the Highlanders. Glenvar was 11-2 and went to the Region 3 final before losing to Appomattox, the eventual state champion.
Glenvar junior Maxx Philpott was named to the first team both ways. Maxx took first team honors on both the offensive and defensive lines, and he was also named the Region 3 Defensive Player of the Year.
Other first team honors for Glenvar went to senior John Shaffer on the offensive line and four defenders, senior Josh Clifford at defensive back, senior Hunter Phlegar as an “all purpose” defender, senior Hunter Stanley at defensive end and a sophomore, Colby Street, at linebacker.
The Highlanders had three players make the All-Region second team, including Clifford at wide receiver. Two sophomores also made the second team, Bradey Loder as a punt returner and Kaid Fuhrman at placekicker.
The All-Three Rivers District team was also recently announced, and Glenvar dominated that team. The Highlanders filled 17 spots on the first two teams, more than any other district team. Giles was second with 13 spots, including Offensive Player of the Year Ryan Beidleman and Coach of the Year Jeff Williams.
Glenvar’s Philpott was named the Three Rivers Defensive Player of the Year and a first team defensive lineman. He was joined on the first team defense by teammates Stanley at end, Street at linebacker, Clifford at defensive back and Phlegar at All-Purpose.
Maxx was also named to the first team offense on the line, as was Shaffer. Senior Jack Leonard was first team at runningback and Clifford was a first team wide receiver.
Second team all-district honors on offense went to junior Landry Gerbers at quarterback, senior Justin Campbell at receiver, Fuhrman at kicker and Loder at kick return. Three more Highlanders made the second team defense, with senior Brandon Saunders on the line, senior Dakota Francisco at linebacker and senior Logan Williams in the secondary.
