The new basketball floor at Salem High School was recently completed, with Tuesday’s game against Northside inaugurating the new court. And, if you played for Salem High, you can have a piece of the old one.
On December 21, when Salem plays host to Hidden Valley, it will be “Piece of the Floor Night” at Salem High. On that night all players who suited up for the Spartans since the school opened in 1977 can pick up a piece of the floor just by attending the game.
“We’ll have 100 to 150 pieces of the floor that includes artwork of the old floor,” said former Salem High coach Charlie Morgan, who will be attending the game. “If we have any leftover pieces people will be able to purchase the extra ones.”
Morgan and one of his former guards, Salem’s Trey Shifflett, got the idea for the promotion when the old floor was being ripped up. Instead of just getting rid of the old planks Shifflett went to work cutting them down to size and doing a diagram of the old floor, including the Spartan logo at midcourt. It’s a good looking piece of memorabilia and something any former player would like to have as a keepsake.
I know I’d like to have one.
