It was opening day for the Little League Challenger Baseball teams Saturday and
seven local teams and two from Franklin County converged on Green Hill Park for
opening ceremonies. Charli Carpenter of the local Yankees had the honor of throwing
out the first ball, and he threw a strike to coach Sid Witt to officially open the
season. Challenger baseball is for Special Needs Children and the local organization
has over 80 kids participating. This weekend the group has their annual fundraising
Fishing Tournament at Smith Mountain Lake. For more information check their web
