The Roanoke College field hockey team is back over .500 after defeating Sweet Briar, 3-1, at RC’s Kerr Stadium last Saturday. With the win the Maroons improved to 5-4 on the season. Saige Bullock got Roanoke on the board first after a scramble in front of the SBC box when Madison Filson tapped the ball to Bullock who fired the goal for the 1-0 lead at 3:19. Bullock would add her second goal of the game in the 20th minute off a misplay by the defense, giving the Maroons the 2-0 lead going into halftime. At the end of the third quarter, Roanoke was awarded a penalty shot, which Maddy Holmes took and scored in the lower left corner of the box for the 3-0 lead.
The Vixens cut the lead to 3-1 but RC held on for the win, outshooting Sweet Briar 20 shots to three for the game. Madison Wingerter earned her fifth win of the season after playing all 90 minutes in goal. The Maroons were scheduled to host Bridgewater College on Wednesday of this week but results were too late for publication. This weekend they’ll be in Harrisonburg Saturday for a noon game against Eastern Mennonite, then return home Sunday to host Sewanee at 11 am.
