The Roanoke College women improved to 2-1-1 in soccer with a 3-0 win over Salisbury in the Shellenberger Classic at Lynchburg College last weekend.
The Maroons played two matches in the tournament. They opened with a 1-1 tie against Wheaton of Illinois on Friday. Laura Garbarini found the back of the net off a header on a pass from Lucy Perry with just under 15 seconds left in the first-half for Roanoke’s goal.
On Saturday Kathryn Van Orden gave the Maroons a quick 1-0 lead as she found the back of the net off a pass from Tori Young just over two minutes into the contest. Twelve minutes later Emily Whitaker doubled RC’s lead with an unassisted goal to extend the lead to 2-0.
After the intermission, Ellie Schad scored the final goal of the night with a shot to the right side of the net off a breakaway. Chris Martin made six saves in net for Roanoke, while Hope Knussman made one for the Sea Gulls. Salisbury owned a 14-5 edge in shots despite losing the game.
The Maroons were scheduled to play at Ferrum on Wednesday, their first of three straight games on the road. On Saturday they play at Randolph-Macon at 1:30 pm, followed by a match at Christopher Newport at 5 pm on September 20. The next home match is September 23 against Eastern Mennonite at 3 pm.
