The Roanoke College women lost their eighth straight basketball game Saturday when they fell to Virginia Wesleyan in Virginia Beach, 77-68.
Virginia Wesleyan got 37 points from Jayla Harris, including 21 in the fourth quarter as the Marlins came from behind to win. Roanoke was led by Cary Beahm, who scored 25 points. Allison Livengood had 14 points, while Chris Martin chipped in with 11 and Bridget Holleran had nine points.
The Maroons led 15-12 after the first quarter, then opened the second quarter with a 19-3 run, taking a 34-15 lead with 4:09 to go in the first half following a pair of free-throws from Beahm. VWC then scored 13 of the final 16 points of the half to trim its deficit to 37-28 at the intermission.
A Livengood three-pointer put RC up 44-30 with just over seven minutes to go in the third quarter. Roanoke led 53-38 with under a minute to go in the third quarter before an Amanda Gerni three-pointer closed the quarter and sparked what would prove to be a 19-5 run that was capped by a Harris jumper that made it 58-57 in RC’s favor with five minutes to go in the game.
A basket by Beahm and a Molly Hassell free-throw made it 61-57 with 3:23 to play in the game, but Virginia Wesleyan made back-to-back baskets to take a 62-61 lead before a Holleran free-throw tied it at 62-62 with 2:31 to play. Harris would make nine free-throws down the stretch to seal the win for the Marlins.
Roanoke was hoping to snap their losing streak with a game against Hollins at RC on Wednesday. The Maroons are at Washington & Lee Saturday for a 2 pm game.
