Howard Daniels finished a team best third place as the Roanoke College cross country team competed at the Hyder McMahill Invite on a very challenging and wet course Saturday morning to kick off the 2017 season. The meet was hosted by Montreat College in Black Mountain, NC.
Daniels clocked a 16:56.4 in the first race of his senior campaign, just 28 seconds behind the first place finisher to claim third. Freshman Devyn Heron crossed the finish line at 17:21.0 to take fifth in his rookie debut. Tyler Barrett (17.28.8) andNathaniel Willis (17:34.4) took seventh and eighth, respectively, to round out the top-ten finishes for the men.
The women were led by freshman Alexis Mattson who clocked a 21:09.6 in her first collegiate race as a Maroon. Seniors Jennifer Barthol and Ellen Bauer followed suit taking seventh and eighth place. Barthol finished the course in 21:26.8 and Bauer was just six seconds behind with 21:32.4.
Megan Boyles took 11th with a time of 21:56.8 while Carly Schepacarter ran a 21:58.6 to take 12th place.
Roanoke returns to action on Friday, Sept. 15 for the Virginia Tech Alumni meet in Blacksburg.
