The Salem Red Sox closed out the first half of the 2018 campaign Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 win over Lynchburg at Calvin Falwell Field. The Sox closed out the first half with a 32-36 record, good for third place in the Northern Division standings.

The Potomac Nationals finished in first place in the Northern Division in the first half with a rcord of 37-30, clinching a spot in the Mills Cup Playoffs in September. The Winston-Salem Dash won the Southern Division with a league-best 41-29 record, and also advanced to the playoffs.

The league took a break from Monday through Wednesday for the annual Carolina League All-Star game, hosted by the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, NC. The game was played on Tuesday night, and results were too late for publication. Look for details in next week’s sports.

Salem had five players in the game. Catcher Roldani Baldwin, first baseman Jerry Downs and shortstop Santiago Espinal comprised the hitting delegation, while the pitching staff sent relievers Matthew Gorst and Daniel Gonzalez.

The Red Sox will kick off the second half with a four-game series against the Frederick Keys at Haley Toyota Field in Salem tonight, Thursday, June 21.
