The River Ridge District tennis tournaments for boys and girls are starting this week at the sites of the top seeds.
The Salem girls are the seventh seed and they were scheduled to play at Cave Spring, the second seed, on Wednesday of this week. Semifinals are Thursday and the championship is scheduled for Friday at the higher remaining seed.
The boys will have the same format, and Salem was scheduled to open with Christiansburg on Wednesday.
The girls recently played five matches in just four day. On Tuesday, May 1, they played Christiansburg at the Salem Civic Center and lost 6-3, then a day later they played a doubleheader at Pulaski, making up the match they missed when the shooter was loose in the county the week before.
“What you do is keep playing until some team gets five wins in singles and doubles,” said coach Mike Gibson. “Pulaski played the best I have ever seen and won both matches, 5-0 and 5-0.”
On Thursday the girls lost to Cave Spring, 9-0, then they had to turn around an play Hidden Valley on Friday and lost 8-1.
“It was the toughest week ever,” said Gibson.
Individual singles and doubles for boys and girls will start next Monday, May 14.
