Roanoke County is marking Cybersecurity Awareness Month with a series of events aimed at teaching residents how to better protect their personal information.
The county will host interactive programs this month, including an escape room challenge, free document shredding and workshops tailored for seniors and families.
The “Cyberscare” escape room will take place Oct. 17 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Brambleton Recreation Center, 3738 Brambleton Ave. The event puts participants in the role of digital detectives who must solve cybersecurity-themed puzzles before time runs out. Organizers said the activity is designed to highlight online safety tips in a hands-on way.
At the same time and location, residents can take part in a free community document shredding event to safely dispose of bills, bank statements and other sensitive papers.
On Oct. 28, the county will hold online safety workshops at South County Library, 6303 Merriman Road. The seniors’ workshop begins at 10 a.m., followed by a session for families at 6 p.m. Topics include recognizing scams, protecting personal data and practicing safe online habits.
