The Salem High girls will be back on the volleyball court tonight to take on Lord Botetourt, the defending Class 3 champions.
The Spartans will host LB tonight following a junior varsity game that begins at 5:30 pm. Salem will go from the frying pan into the fire. The girls opened the season Tuesday at home against a feisty Lynchburg Christian Academy team in four sets. Lord Botetourt will be even more of a challenge as the Cavaliers come to town riding a 33 game winning streak. “We have to be aggressive if we want to have a chance to beat them,” said Salem coach Amanda Hristov. “And we have to play smart.” Tuesday’s season opener got off to a good start, as Salem won the first set 25-22. LCA tied the match with a 25-23 win in the second set and a key third set went to the Bulldogs, 25-22. Liberty Christian put it away with a 25-17 win in the fourth set. Janae Blakeney and Telia Harris led Salem with nine kills each, and Telia also had 15 digs and six blocks. Janae had eight digs. Haley Steffan had 21 assists and five digs for Salem while Brooke Baxley had eight digs to go with three aces. Maddie Hall had three kills and 13 digs. The Spartans continue a busy season next week as they host E.C. Glass on Monday and Alleghany Tuesday. Then, a week from today, the Spartans head to Lynchburg to return the trip to LCA. Glenvar will open its season tonight at home against Blacksburg. Next Tuesday, August 28, Glenvar will host Hidden Valley.
