The Salem High girls and boys swim teams both finished third in the Class 4A, Region D swim meet at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center last week.
Jefferson Forest won the boys’ meet, followed by Blacksburg and Salem. There were 11 schools competing in Region D.
Salem’s Shayom Debopadhaya placed second overall in both the 200 IM and 100 Fly. Nick Lawson placed second in the 500 Free and the boys’ 200 Free Relay was second overall with the team of Logan DeWalt, Ben James, Debopadhaya and Jake Lawson.
Blacksburg won the girls title, followed by E.C. Glass and Salem among 10 teams competing. The Salem girls’ 200 Medley team won the region championship with the team of Ellyn Anama, Anna Clare Fleenor, McKenna Habeeb, and Sandy James. Anna Clare won the 100 Free while Anama placed second in the 50 Free and got her state cut.
James placed third in the 200 IM, qualifying her for states. The girls 200 Free Relay placed third overall and qualified for states with the team of Habeeb , Sarah Kate Brownmiller, Alyssa Akers and Claire Peterson.
The state meet is this Saturday in Richmond. Salem will take 14 swimmers, including Logan DeWalt, Shayom Debopadhaya, Ben James, Jake Lawson, Nick Lawson, James Miles, Alyssa Akers, Ellyn Anama, Sarah Kate Brownmiller, Abigail Crawford, Anna Clare Fleenor, McKenna Habeeb, Sandy James and Claire Peterson.
