Salem’s first responders gathered last Thursday morning at the city’s 9/11 Memorial to honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Firefighters, police officers, sheriff’s deputies, medics and support staff stood at the base of the memorial outside Fire Station No. 1 to remember those who died 24 years ago. The ceremony was led by Fire and EMS Chief Steve Simon, Police Chief Derek Weeks and Sheriff Chris Shelor.
The service included a moment of silence, the pledge of allegiance, a prayer, the tolling of the bell and a performance of the national anthem by Crystal Williams.
The memorial features a steel beam from the north tower of the World Trade Center. The beam was removed from Old Virginia Brick, restored by the Salem Street Department and anchored at the city’s Public Safety corner in 2015.
