The Salem High girls won the Conference 24 track championship on their home oval Saturday, nearly lapping the field. Salem scored 169 points to 109 for second place Pulaski County.
Salem qualified 17 for the Region 4A West meet, scheduled for today at Liberty University. Janae Blakeney took first place in both the long jump and 200 while taking a second in the 100. Hannah Moran won both the 1,600 and 3,200, setting a new school record in the 1,600 with a time of 5:07.29. Alyssa Ingerson was third in the 3,200 and fifth in the 1,600. Carolina Bowen and Madison Baxley took fourth and fifth in the 3,200 as the Spartans rolled up points in the distance events.
Mia Cromer won the high jump at five feet even. ShaCoya Price took second in the triple jump, third in the long jump and sixth in the 100. Te’asia Thomas was fourth in the triple jump while sister Te’Arah took a second in the 100 hurdles and Angie Orange was sixth in that race.
Tawni Hunt took a second in the 400. Raniyah Majied and Ellie Look were third and fourth in the 800. In the throwing events Selma Marunica was second in the discus and sixth in the shot.
Salem took first in the 4×100, 4×400 and 4×800 relays. The 4×100 team consisted of Hunt, Price, and the Thomas sisters. The 4×400 foursome was Blakeney, Hunt, Look and Majied and the 4×800 conference champs were Look, Majied, Izzy Donahue, and Alexis Stover.
William Fleming won the boys’ title and Pulaski County once again finished second. Salem was fifth among the six with 30 points.
Sean Tyree had a nice day with a third in the 400, a fourth in the long jump and a fifth in the 200, regionally qualifying in all three. Thomas Mundy was third in the shot and fourth in the discus and qualified for the region in both of those events. Maxwell Plummer also qualified for the region with a fifth in the shot put.
Salem took fourth in the 4×400 relay with Kirill Daniel, Aiden Sable, Logan Wagher and Tyree and was fifth in the 4×800 with Ethan Carroll, Christian Crawley, Elijah Hairston and Zachery Hoyer. Only the top two relays advanced, but both scored points for the Spartans.
Today at Liberty the field events begin at 10:45 am and the running events start at 1 pm.
