Salem girls finish first in “pre-region” meet at Byrd

The Salem High track team competed in two meets last week. The Spartans hosted a meet on Wednesday, April 18, and competed in the William Byrd “Pre-Regional” meet on Saturday.

On Wednesday the Spartans hosted Christiansburg and Blacksburg as the girls took second and the boys were third with Blacksburg sweeping the meet. For the girls, event winners included ShaCoya Price in the 100 and Long Jump, Selma Marunica in the shot and discus and the 4×800 relay team.

For the boys, Jeremiah Wilson won the 110 hurdles and Da’Jon Cardwell won the discus.

On Saturday the Salem girls finished first in the meet at Byrd. Event winners included Mia Cromer in the high jump and Marunica in the discus. Second place winners were Kalei Menner in the discus, Raniyah Majied in the 400,  Price in the long jump and 100 and the 4×800 relay team of  Sarah Ahlers, Madison Baxley, Emma Chamberland and Samantha Richardson.

For the boys, Wilson won the 100 hurdles and took third in the 200 and fifth in the 300 hurdles. The 4x800m relay team of Aiden Sable, Nathan Helems, Christian Crawley and Zach Hoyer finished third and the 4x400m Relay team of Logan Boettcher,Crawley, Amarri Edwards and Camron Sutley also took a third. The boys were ninth overall among 12 teams.

“We also had many runners have their best performances of the year but did not place,” said coach Jeff Leftwich.

Salem will compete in the Blacksburg Invitational this Saturday.
