The Salem and Glenvar football teams will play Benefit Games this Friday in their final tuneup for the 2017 season.
Salem will play host to Magna Vista at Salem Stadium on Friday at 7 pm. It will be a game situation, with an admission charge, and it will be played like a regular game with the possible exception of kick returns.
“It’s a game but we’ll treat it like a scrimmage,” said Salem coach Stephen Magenbauer. “We don’t game plan for preseason games.”
Andrew Lewis Middle School will kick off the regular season prior to Friday’s benefit game. The Wolverines will play host to William Byrd Middle School at 4 pm.
Glenvar will have a benefit game at Blacksburg on Friday. It will be a good test for the Highlanders, as Blacksburg was the Group 3A state champion last year and the Bruins have a strong nucleus from that team returning.
“They don’t do a lot of things we’ll see during the season,” said Glenvar coach Kevin Clifford. “It will be a challenge. You always want to see the best competition possible.”
Today the Andrew Lewis seventh grade team will play host to Glenvar Middle School at Salem Stadium. That will begin at 5 pm.
High School regular season action begins on Friday, August 25, when Salem plays at Amherst and Glenvar hosts Galax. Look for our annual high school preview, “Touchdown XVI,” in next week’s edition.
