The latest rankings of high schools in America are out, and the 2025-26 U.S. News and World Report list has Salem High School ranked as the 48th best in all of Virginia.
“We are extremely proud that Salem High School has been recognized with this prestigious ranking,” said Kelly Linkenhoker, Salem High School principal. “This honor reflects the dedication of our students, the commitment of our staff, and the ongoing support of our families and community.”
Salem High School has made significant steps on this ladder of success in a relatively short period of time. Just four years ago, Salem was ranked 208th in the commonwealth.
“This is a huge accomplishment, and it belongs to each and every employee in the Division,” said Curtis Hicks, Salem School Division superintendent. “As a one–high school division, every teacher, staff member, and administrator, whether in preschool, elementary, middle, or high school, plays a role in this success.”
There are 130 school divisions in Virginia with 335 high schools. Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology is the number one ranked high school in the state.
“At Salem High, we are committed to fostering excellence in academics, character, and opportunity for every student,” said Linkenhoker. “This is a very humbling and satisfying acknowledgment for the work our staff members do each day.”
Salem ranks second in the Roanoke Valley’s list of the top 12 high schools just behind Cave Spring High School. The 12-school area includes Salem, Roanoke County, Roanoke City, Botetourt County, Franklin County and Craig County.
“Our students in Salem are shaped by each individual they encounter, every step of the way,” said Hicks. “While we are certainly proud of the improvement we’ve made, we won’t be satisfied until we are #1.”
