The Biden Administration is honoring students and teachers this holiday season as part of the holiday festivities at the White House. Part of the recognition involves hanging their handmade ornaments on a Christmas tree. This December two Salem High School students have their self-portrait ornaments hanging on a tree in the State Dining Room alongside the portrait of President Lincoln and with the ornaments created by other students from around the country. Virginia’s 2020 State Teacher of the Year, Andrea Johnson, who is now an assistant principal at the high school, was invited to ask Salem High School students to submit their ornaments. The chosen ornaments of senior Tori Stassin and sophomore Abby Jones are featured. First Lady Jill Biden’s final holiday theme is a “Season of Peace and Light” guided by the values of faith, family, service to the country, kindness towards our neighbors, and the power of community and connection. There are 83 trees throughout the White House. Each year, no matter who the president is, more than 300 volunteers from all across the country work a full week to decorate the White House both inside and out. -The Salem Times-Register
