Salem School Board Vice-Chair Teresa E. Sizemore was injured in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 late last month and has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, according to Virginia State Police.

Sgt. Richard Garletts, public information officer for the State Police, said the crash occurred at 3:55 p.m. Aug. 30 at the 134.7-mile marker. Sizemore, driving a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban, was traveling south when the vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a guardrail and overturned.

Garletts said Sizemore was wearing her seatbelt and was transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries. She was charged under Virginia Code 18.2-266 with driving under the influence of alcohol.

“Ms. Sizemore recently made us aware of the accident and the associated charge,” Salem City Communications Director Mike Stevens said in a statement on behalf of the school division. “We are thankful that she was not seriously injured and that no one else was involved. As this is an ongoing investigation, we have nothing further to add at this time.”

Sizemore has served on the Salem School Board since June 2021 and was appointed vice-chair earlier this year. In Salem, school board members are appointed by City Council rather than elected.

Sizemore was absent from the Tuesday night school board meeting. Additionally, she did not return a request for comment as of press time.
