I am pleased to offer my public endorsement to Major April M. Staton for Sheriff in the November 7 general election. Major Staton has been an integral part of the Sheriff’s Office since 2003.
I like to use the word dynamic when referring to Major Staton because she’s well-versed in all aspects of the office and performs her duties at a very high level. The Chief Deputy position is a very challenging job and she handles it with commitment and determination. Not only is she charged with the oversight of our mandated duties, she is also the Accreditation Manager for the office which requires a high degree of detail and organization. Having been in the position myself, I know how demanding it is. Realizing that she’s not just a public servant while in uniform, she is selfless in giving of her time, energy, and resources to the local and state Special Olympics program as a volunteer, coach, and fundraiser. She has also volunteered over the years for special events for the Salem Rotary Club, Salem Parks and Rec., as well as the Salem Needlework Guild.
For 14 years April Staton has lived the Salem Sheriff’s Office, first as a deputy sheriff, then Master Deputy, front line supervisor, then taking on the administrative role as Chief Deputy. We’ve had some really great Sheriffs over the years and I’ve had the pleasure of working under two of them. I’m comfortable in saying that Major Staton has the tools, knowledge, and abilities to be the best we’ve ever had. She will by far be the most qualified candidate for the position of Sheriff for the City of Salem.
