The Salem High soccer teams opened the spring season with wins over George Washington High of Danville Monday. The boys took a 6-2 win in Danville and the girls beat the Eagles at home, 9-0.
The boys jumped to a 4-0 at the half and everyone on the roster played in the game. Logan Lavinder had the first goal assisted by TJ Fisher. Anthony Rugama scored a few minutes later, assisted by Logan Lavinder.
Logan would add two more before halftime for the hat trick, assisted by Rugama on the first and Sam Villegas on the second.
Rugama would open up the second half with a goal, assisted by Graham Cross. Finally Cross added the 6th goal unassisted. Ronald Cortez-Hernandez had one save in the first 60 minutes.
“Overall a solid start to the year and something to build on,” said Salem coach David Atkins.
The girls shut out the Eagles at Spartan Field as Laikyn Funk scored three goals and assisted on another. Blair Bowers scored two goals and had one assist and other goal scorers were Avery Mangus, Rosie Horne, Aly Price and Ashlyn Adkins. Karis Guy and Aubrey Thomas combined for the shutout in goal.
Salem teams were scheduled to play William Byrd on Wednesday but results were too late for publication.
